The rules governing outbuildings apply to sheds, greenhouses, and garages as well as other ancillary garden buildings such as swimming pools, ponds, sauna cabins, kennels, enclosures (including tennis courts), and many other kinds of structures for a purpose incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling house. This includes a container used for domestic heating oil or petroleum gas.

‘Incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling house’ includes the keeping of poultry, bees, pet animals, birds, or other livestock for the domestic needs or personal enjoyment of the occupants of the house.

When considering the construction of an outbuilding such as, a summer house, Gym, or home office, it's indeed true that in many instances planning permission may not be required, (Permitted Development), This is typically the case when the structure is not on designated land not forward of the principal elevation, positioned at the rear or side of the main house (not abutting a highway on corner plots), does not exceed 50% of the garden space, and is not intended for separate habitation. Height restrictions are also an important consideration; for example, if the building is within 2 metres of a boundary, the maximum height should not surpass 2.5 metres. For structures further away, the permissible height increases, with a 4-metre limit if the building has an apex roof, or a 3-metre limit for flat-roofed constructions. However, the eaves of any roof should not exceed 2.5 metres in height.
